The 2013 Melbourne Cup lead-up form of Super Cool has been inconclusive but jockey Corey Brown believes that the Australian Cupwinner has had the ideal preparation for the $6 million Group 1 event.
Super Cool won both the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) and Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) during the 2013 Melbourne Festival Of Racing but has been unable to replicate that form since returning to the races as three-year-old.
The Fastnet Rock gelding started his campaign with a promising third in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1600m) and had no luck in either the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m).
Super Cool was outclassed by glamour mare Atlantic Jewel in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) before battling on fairly to finish fifth in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) in his last warm-up run before the 2013 Melbourne Cup.
Brown has returned from Singapore to ride Super Cool and told AAP that he is delighted to be on a horse that he believes has had an ideal preparation for the 2013 Melbourne Cup.
“He’s a nice horse, he’s been set for the race and he didn’t have to duck and weave to get into the race so he’s had the perfect preparation,” Brown said.
“I’ve got no doubt that he’ll get the two miles and he feels more like a two-miler than a Cox Plate hose.
“Kav said that he’s come on since his last run and I’m really happy to be riding him.”
Brown finished a narrow second on Bauer in the 2008 edition of the Melbourne Cup but returned the following year to win the race on Shocking; with what he admitted after the race was not the finest ride of his career.
The leading jockey said that winning the Melbourne Cup is one of the greatest feelings he has ever experienced in his life and would dearly love to combine with trainer Mark Kavanagh to record another victory in ‘the race that stops a nation.’
“I wish I could explain it,” Brown said about winning the Melbourne Cup.
“If I could bottle it and give everyone a try, you couldn’t put a price tag on it.
“It’s just really, really special and nothing like this happens anywhere else in the world.
“It’s very unique and I’m just proud to be a part of it.”
Super Cool is currently an outside in 2013 Melbourne Cup betting markets at odds of $42; with favourite Fiorente back out to $7.50 after being backed into $7 earlier in the day.
