The Hawkes training team unearthed an impressive first starter when Anjea easily won the William Cook (1000m, 2YO) at Moonee Valley tonight.

Raced in the colours of the great Makybe Diva, the daughter of Purrealist and Smytzer’s Rose played with her four rivals after missing the start.

Strongly supported by punters, Anjea missed the start by three lengths but was able to move up to fourth when Chris Symons aboard Dance Card went slowly in front.

Jockey Dwayne Dunn moved Anjea up to Dance Card and Danestroem, who settled second, and  dashed clear without using the whip.

The $110,000 Magic Millions purchase has a bright future.

“She never missed the start before, it gave me a couple of heart flutters,” co-trained Wayne Hawkes said.

“It was good it was a small field because if it happened in a big field you would be six to eight lengths off them.

“But she had a bit too much on them.

“She laid a bit in the straight and did a few things wrong so there is plenty of upside.

“She is by Purrealist and they might be okay, I think it is his third (2yo) winner, I think he has had one in Sydney and Brisbane.

Anjea and her sire Purrealist are owned by Tony and Deslee Santic, the owners of former great mare Makybe Diva.

Purrealist stands at their Makybe Stud at Gnarwarre in Victoria for $8800.

The Hawkes team, consisting of father John, and brothers Wayne and Michael, will assess how Anjea pulls up before deciding what to do next with her.
