Winter Cup Likely For Kapour

Kapour was included in the nominations for both the 2015 Winter Cup and the Banjo Paterson Series Heat 5 that were released yesterday, but trainer Ciaron Maher has revealed that he is leaning towards running the imported stayer in the Listed event at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Kapour has raced exclusively in Victoria since he made his Australian racing debut in September of last year, but the recent wet weather in Sydney has Maher considering giving the Toylsome gelding an opportunity on a likely soft track in the Listed Winter Cup (2400m) this weekend.

“His work was quite good this morning and I am just going to have a look at the weather patterns and see where we take him,” Maher told Racing Ahead.

“I think he appreciates a bit of give in the tracks and they have had a bit of weather up there in Sydney, so we will just work that out.”

Kapour made his racing debut in France under the care of Francois Rohaut and he started his racing career with three straight victories at Mont-De-Marsan, Bordeaux and Saint Cloud before he made his debut at Group level with a second place finish behind Tablelaux in the Group 2 Prix Noailles (2100m) at Longchamp in April of 2013.

The gelding finished second again in the Prix Frederic De Lagrangre at Vichy and he failed to fire when 11th behind former Gai Waterhouse-trained galloper Tres Blue in the Group 2 Grand Prix De Deauville (2500m) in August of 2013 and he finished fourth in his final European race start in the Group 3 Prix Andre Baboin (1900m) at Bordeaux.

Kapour made his Australian racing debut with a tenth place finish behind St Jean in the Sportingbet Handicap (1600m) at Moonee Valley in September last year and he was sent back to the spelling paddock after he failed to beat home a runner in the Inglis Ready2race Sale Handicap (2000m) at Caulfield on September 28.

The five-year-old returned to racing with an improved performance in the Carlton Draught Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on May 16 and he battled home fairly when he finished sixth behind Digitalism in the Dominant Handicap (2040m) at Moonee Valley on June 6.

Kapour was one of 13 horses included in the 2015 Winter Cup nominations and is set to take on the likes of Bagman, Bonfire, Black Jag, Danchai, Our Voodoo Prince and Reigning in the Listed event this weekend.
