The 2025 Caulfield Cup is shaping up to be a cracker, with 85 spring stayers remaining in contention following the first acceptance stage on Tuesday.

Among the remaining hopefuls is the Chris Waller-trained mare Buckaroo, who has firmed into outright favoritism after an eye-catching return to racing.

Waller, a two-time Caulfield Cup winner, has a massive 22 horses remaining in the mix, with his main contender Buckaroo leading the way.

The Fastnet Rock seven-year-old has been a major mover in the futures Caulfield Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes, slashing his price from $11 to $6 after an impressive third-place finish in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes.

Last year’s Caulfield Cup runner-up, he is now a firm favourite to go one better this year.

The other best-fancied from the Waller contingent are the Australian Derby-winning filly Aeliana ($9) and last year’s third-place getter Land Legend ($15).

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, who won the Cup in 2010 with Descarado, have a strong hand with a trio of runners.

Their top chance is the imported stayer Vauban ($8), who was a two-time disappointment in the Melbourne Cup but has now settled in Australia and produced an eye-catching second in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes.

Their other chances include the classy mare Alalcance ($26) and the nicely bred Frankel entire Sir Delius ($15), who firmed in betting after running a close second in the Chelmsford.

After originally attracting 12 international nominations, there are just four remaining in the Caulfield Cup.

The international contingent includes French-trained Presage Nocturne ($26), Japanese mare Golden Snap ($26), two-time Melbourne Cup performer Absurde ($34), and the Simon & Ed Crisford-trained Meydaan ($34). They’ll be looking to be the first overseas winner since Mer De Glace in 2019.

Ciaron Maher, who won this race last year with Duke De Sessa, has a strong hand with 16 remaining hopefuls. His top contender is the import Middle Earth ($13), who has shown plenty of promise in his short Australian career.

Second acceptances for the race will close at midday on Tuesday, September 23.
