Sydney jockey Tye Angland has regained the ride on Hooked in the Group 1 $1.5m AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 11.
Brisbane’s leading jockey Jim Byrne was aboard Hooked in the Group 1 $750,000 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10000 (1350m) at Doomben last Saturday when he got into a speed battle with Fell Swoop and Tw0 Blue.
Angland tweeted on Tuesday confirming that he was back aboard Hooked in the Stradbroke Handicap.
“Happy to confirm the ride on Hooked in the Stradbroke for @JTRacingRwik Now the diet starts to ride 54kgs,” Angland tweeted.
Trainer John Thompson was furious after the race when Hooked ran out of puff after going to hard in the middle stages to be beaten five lengths when seventh to Music Magnate.
“There were two Group 1s today, the race and the spray I just gave my jockey,” Thomspon said after the race.
Chief Steward Alan Reardon questioned the three jockeys who set a frantic pace with Zac Purton telling the panel that he had trouble holding his mount Fell Swoop who was racing very fiercely.
“He was too fierce and I couldn’t hold mine,” Purton said.
“I was trying to let the leader go and had to strangle him. He was pulling quite hard from the 1200m.”
Byrne said that when Fell Swoop bumped him at the 800m Hooked also commenced to race fiercely.
“When Zac came out and bumped my horse I was just into the bridle,” Byrne said.
Angland is no stranger to Hooked and partnered the six year old to victory in the Group 2 $175,000 Tattersalls Club Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick during the 2015 Sydney Spring Carnival.
Then at his next two runs with Angland in the saddle again, Hooked was well beaten when ninth to Kermadec in the Group 1 $500,000 Colgate Optic White George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick followed by an eleventh to Winx in the Group 1 $1m The Star 150th Epsom (1600m) at Randwick on October 3.
