Friday is D-Day for Top Drop, either he jumps with the rest of them and turns in a good performance or the talented colt will become a talented gelding.

The four year old has been a perfect gentleman throughout his career but in Monday’s Listed Carrington Stakes things went pear shaped.

Top Drop stood there as the gates opened, the second favourite giving away at least 15 lengths at the start and tailing them in a distant last.

Trainer Gerald Ryan says Magic Millions plans can still be salvaged but only if he does his job in a 1030m trial at the end of the week.

“If he goes OK we will proceed to the Gold Coast,” Ryan said.

“If he doesn’t he will be gelded.”

Ryan is confident he can pass the stewards enforced trial but is still concerned by this new occurrence.

“He has never done anything like it before but he was behaving like a stallion in the barrier and then when the gates opened he didn’t go with them,” he said.

Ryan would dearly love to have a fully switched on Top Drop as part of his Magic Millions team given it’s already very strong.

Not only does he have one of the favourites in the 2yo classic with Amorino, Angel Of Mercy also looks like being a threat should she get into the 3yo Guineas field.

Both horses are coming off impressive last start wins in Sydney and Ryan especially likes his chances in the main event.

“He’s come through Saturday well and I’m really pleased with him,” Ryan said.

If Angel Of Mercy misses out on a spot in the Guineas she will still travel to the Gold Coast and run in the fillies and mares event.
