The 2016 The Galaxy is set to be the major Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival target for speedy mare Lumosty.
Lumosty joined stablemates Politeness, Atmospherical and Odyssey Moon at the Caulfield jump outs yesterday morning, but trainer Robert Smerdon revealed at the conclusion of her very quiet trial that she was still almost two months away from a return to racing and would miss the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival
Smerdon told The Punters Show that Lumosty would likely be set for the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 19 before heading to Adelaide for a clash with a number of talented mares in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on May 7.
“She is a little bit behind the other two mares and I think a race like the Galaxy could be something we look at in Sydney for her,” Smerdon said.
“I’d like to get her across to Adelaide as well for the Sangster, there aren’t many opportunities for mares at the top level when they race their own sex and it could be a nice opportunity for her.”
Lumosty started her racing career with a second place finish behind Eloping in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) at Caulfield in January of 2014 and she was originally trained as a stayer, with the tough mare finished a more than credible sixth behind Set Square in the 2014 edition of the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington.
Smerdon changed paths with Lumosty for her winter campaign and she started her preparation with impressive victories in the All Victorian Sprint Series (1100m) at Flemington on May 9 and the Listed The Straight Six (1200m) at Flemington on May 23.
Lumosty started the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on June 6 as a narrow favourite, but she was caught wide throughout and was unable to finish better than tenth before she produced a much improved performance to finish third behind Srikandi in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at the Gold Coast on June 20.
The Fastnet Rock filly was saved for a late 2015 Spring Racing Carnival campaign and she returned to the races to dead heat the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1000m) with Éclair Choice at Caulfield on October 17 before she finished two and a half lengths behind Delectation in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington on November 7.
Lumosty is currently available at 2016 TJ Smith Stakes odds of $17, while Chautauqua ($3.50) is a clear favourite from Exosphere ($5.50), Terravista ($11), Delectation ($11) and Buffering ($13).
