Tatt’s Tiara Start Up in the Air for Peron

Classy three-year-old Peron has an early obstacle to overcome ahead of Saturday’s Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m), she has to actually make the field.

Likely to attract plenty of interest from punters if she gets a run, the emerging galloper currently sits at 23rd in the order of entry for the last Group 1 of the 2012-13 racing season.

With acceptances not due until 9:00 am on Wednesday, trainer John Thompson faces a nervous wait to see if others will drop out and his rising star will grab a spot in the 18-horse field.

Thompson was forced to run the daughter of Husson last weekend in order to improve her chances of gaining a start. She did all she could, winning the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic and collecting the $65,500 winner’s cheque , but it still may not be enough.

The win was her third straight this winter and took her career record to six wins from seven starts.

The Tatt’s Tiara received 29 entries on Monday including a number of proven Group performers.

Guy Walter will have a strong dual-pronged attack in the $500,000 fillies and mares’ race, with the Warwick Farm trainer set to accept with both Skyerush and Streama.

Second in the Tatt’s Tiara last year, Skyerush resumes after two straight wins to finish her Sydney autumn campaign. Streama will be out to turn good performances into victory after running fourth in the Doncaster Mile and third in the Stradbroke.

Also set to start among the favourites is Chris Waller’s consistent mare Red Tracer. The five-year-old won traditional Tatt’s Tiara lead-up the Dane Ripper Stakes but is yet to break through in nine starts at Group 1 level.
