Sea Lord Capable of Sir John Monash Stakes Success

Sea Lord was included amongst a talented list of sixteen nominations for Saturday’s featured Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield, but trainer Stephen Brown is confident the veteran gelding is more than up to the task.

A strong and consistent performer for Brown since arriving in his care from David Payne’s stables prior to his 2012 campaign, Sea Lord failed to make anything of an impact when eleventh in a Moonee Valley Benchmark sprint over 1200m on June 6th but will carry winning form into the Sir John Monash Stakes after taking out the Sporting Globe Best Bar Handicap (1200m) by two lengths on June 20th.

Revealing the son of Street Cry has suffered from hoof issues throughout his entire 44 start career, Brown is confident the Caulfield conditions will play into the strengths of Sea Lord on Saturday.

“He’s got very shelly feet and if you don’t stay on top of it he can feel them,” Brown told AAP.

“But I’ve got a good farrier and we’ve kept on top of them this preparation.

“I think he’s back in form and looks fantastic.

“I think it’s quite a nice race for him so more than likely he will run.

“He’s going really well. He looks well and I’m really happy with him.”

Having undoubtedly found his best form in preparations geared through winter black type races and into spring, Sea Lord finished mid-pack in each of the Listed All Victoria Sprint Final (1200m) and Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) upon resuming in 2013; progressing to a close second behind Richie’s Vibe in the Listed MSS Security Sprint (1200m) most notably.

Returning in 2014 for a credible fifth behind the likes of Under The Louvre and Hard Stride in the 1Print BM90 (1200m), Sea Lord finished third in the Weary Dunlop BM90 (1206m) and won the Dual Choice Handicap (1200m), but failed to handle the late pace when tenth in the MSS Security Sprint.

The 2015 Sir John Monash Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
