Samovare could be Kingston Town Classic contender

Perth trainer Daniel Morton is considering stepping three year old filly Samovare up to weigh for age company in the Group 1 $1m Peters Investments-Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot in Perth on December 3.

Samovare scored a comfortable win over the unlucky Ellicazoom in the Group 3 $200,000 W.A. Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m) at Ascot last Saturday against her own age and sex and Morton is adamant that she is the best filly he has trained.

“She’s a classic filly. I wasn’t joking when I said I’ve never put a saddle on a nicer filly,” Morton told The West Australian.

Morton’s pre-race plan came together for Samovare who sat behind Paul Harvey’s mount I Am Boudica in the middle stages of the race.

Winning jockey Brad Parnham let Samovare ($5) slide at the top of the straight and the Savabeel filly had plenty in reserve to hold on for a one length win over Ellicazoom ($3.20 favourite) with I Am Boudica ($4.20) holding on for third.

“We had an inkling Paul might go forward on I Am Boudica and it worked out beautifully,” Morton said.

“We knew if he did we could just track him up and I said to Brad ‘don’t die wondering coming to the corner, she’ll run a mile out and make them chase you’.

Morton has the option of backing Samovare up in a week against her own age in the Group 2 $500,000 W.A. Guineas (1600m) at Ascot this Saturday but is leaning towards giving her plenty of time to recover from the Champion Fillies Stales win before taking on the older horses at weight for age.

Runner up Ellicazoom was the unlucky runner in the Champion Fillies Stakes after being severely hampered at the 1400m when I Am Boudica crossed over in front of the field from a wide barrier to settle just behind the leader Caipirinha.

Ellicazoom with with Steven Parnham in the saddle lost several lengths in the incident but was still bale to finish off the race strongly to run into second spot.

Jockey Paul Harvey, who rode I Am Boudica, was suspended for careless riding for twenty-six meetings as a result of causing the interference which also caused Jenabel to be hampered.

Samovare is listed as a $17 chance for the Kingston Town Classic at Ladbrokes.com.au who have the local mare Perfect Reflection as the $7 favourite just ahead of her stablemate Disposition at $8.

Group 1 winning New Zealand mare Kawi is next in the betting at $10 alongside of the Darren Weir trained Rageese with Mackintosh from the Chris Waller stable on $11 and He Or She and Tradesman are sharing the next line of betting at $13.
