Salade To Tackle Mile After Lacking Slipper Speed

Salade will next take on the mile distance in the Listed Fernhill Handicap at Randwick

After a disappointing Golden Slipper Salade will have a chance at getting back on the right track this weekend in the Listed Fernhill Handicap.

Salade won the Pago Pago Stakes to earn a spot in the Golden Slipper field and had some healthy support but never really got into the race.

Bart Cummings is gambling on his two-year-old having the stamina to see out the 1600m Fernhill Handicap, the first mile event for two-year-olds this season.

“He’s quite a laid back customer and we’ll take the blinkers off which will help him relax and give him his chance to run out a strong mile,” stable foreman James Cummings said.

“Bart’s very confident he’ll run a mile.

Salade is sired by Snitzel, a horse renowned for success in sprint events both when he raced and also now with his stock.

“He is a Snitzel and there would be a select group of them that would be stakes winning milers and hopefully he’s one of the select few come Saturday afternoon,” Cummings said.

Salade’s first start was his Pago Pago Stakes win and reports are that he’s still in good shape after his eighth placed Golden Slipper finish.

“He raced with his head up a bit with the blinkers on and he let down once it was all over,” Cummings said.

“He wasn’t disgraced in the Slipper and this is a class drop so he’ll be one of the chances on Saturday if he can see out the trip.”
