Sagaronne started her winter campaign with a win at the Gold Coast on May 9 and she flew home late to take out the Listed The Phoenix (1350m) at Doomben on May 30 before she finished a more than credible second behind Press Statement in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) at Doomben on June 6.

The Real Saga filly was sent straight to the spelling paddock following her strong showing in the J.J. Atkins and Edmonds told Sky Racing HQ that the rising three-year-old had taken plenty of benefit out of her stint in the spelling paddock.

“She had a month out and spelled terrifically,” Edmonds said.

“She seems to have grown, filled out and matured.

“She didn’t have a heavy campaign, she only had the three starts during the winter and we were always looking towards the spring.

“She is on the right track, she is a big gross filly that has a stature that is above her age.

“While these other ones are all catching up, she is there already and we are looking forward to it.”

Sagaronne is based at Edmonds’ Gold Coast stable, but the rising trainer does not plan to give his star filly a race start in Queensland this preparation and she will head straight to Victoria after she has a barrier trial at the Gold Coast.

The Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) will be the major goal for Sagaronne and Edmonds said that she will contest the traditional lead-up races like the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, the Listed Ethereal Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on October 17 and the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on October 4.

“We have earmarked the Grand Final as the VRC Oaks and she will probably head straight to Melbourne after she trials at the Gold Coast,” Edmonds said.

“She will go through the traditional lead-ups to the Oaks and hopefully we can have her ready for that day.

“She will trial in about three weeks’ time and they do carry a fair bit of residual fitness from that preparation out to a mile.

“She is very clean-winded and I am quite happy with where she is at, at the moment.”

Sagaronne was purchased for $82,500 at the 2014 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale and she has already accumulated almost $200,000 in prizemoney from her four race starts.
