Runway Star earns a chance to tackle G1 Tatts Tiara

Last Saturday’s Morphettville winner Runway Star is a good chance of heading to Queensland to take on Group 1 company in the $500,000 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Club Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 25.

Leading Adelaide trainer Phillip Stokes is keen to give Runway Star another chance against the fillies and mares in Group 1 company after she returned to the winner’s stall when she beat Private Secretary and A Lottta Love in the Group 3 $120,000 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m).

“She’s a very smart mare and she can get further I think,” Stokes told racing.com.

“I just hope they keep her going for a bit longer – they want to send her to stud.”

Runway Star has had two attempts at Group 1 level with a tenth to Miracles Of Life in the 2015 $400,000 William Hill Classic (Registered as Robert Sangster Stakes) (1200m) at Morphettville and two starts back ran sixth to Precious Gem in this year’s Robert Sangster Stakes.

“It was a massive run (in the Sangster), she should’ve finished a lot closer,” Stokes said.

Runway Star has won six of her eighteen starts and even though she has never raced beyond 1200m, Stokes is confident that the Northern Meteor mare will handle the step to 1400m in the Tattersall’s Club Tiara.

“I reckon she can run out a strong 1400m,” Stokes said.

Runway Star began her career with Sydney trainer Gerald Ryan before being transferred to Peter Moody and then found her way into Stokes’ Adelaide stables when the leading Caulfield trainer decided to disperse his team after being suspended for six months on cobalt related charges.

Runway Star has had three runs for Stokes and kicked off her latest campaign for her new stable with a third to Nostradamus in the Group 3 $120,000 Hughes Chauffeured Limousines R N Irwin Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville on April 23.
