$101 outsider Vienna Miss has scored the big upset of 2017 South Australian Derby Day; maintaining to the line to win the Listed Adelaide Guineas (1600m) from resounding favourite Petition.
Jockey Katelyn Mallyon was checked by doctors after a slight mishap at the barriers prior to jump, but the in-form hoop confidently rode Vienna Miss forward from the gates and took a positive position close to the early pace.
Finding a gap between runners rounding onto the final straight, Vienna Miss threaded the needle and pulled a length clear of her closest rivals; maintaining a strong-enough sprint to hold off the late challenge of Petition; Chapel City also running on well to finish third.
Vienna Miss has shown plenty of ability throughout her racing career, but she has been reasonably inconsistent and finished ninth in the Listed Nitschke Stakes (1300m) a fortnight ago.
