Last Saturday’s impressive Randwick winner Roheryn is still at double figure oods for the 2019 $7.5m Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill on November 2.
Roheryn was having his first run back since November and was sent out as the $1.40 favourite for the 1200m BenchMark 88 Handicap and after settling at the tail of the seven horse field in the early stages of the race, the James Cummings trained gelding cruised up to the leaders at the top of the rise before going on to record a one and a half lengths win.
Cummings was reluctant to name a Spring Carnival target race for Roheryn, indicating that he would work the four year old up through the grades, but he didn’t rule out a start in the Golden Eagle against his own age group.
“There is a plenty of improvement to come so this is a good start to his preparation,’ Cummings said.
“Roheryn has a lot of ratings to climb before he has to compete with those horses.’’
“To avoid the relative deprivation of breaking his heart against those better horses we will do the right thing by him.”
“I think he is a sprinter-miler but while he is still sprinting beautifully we will leave it at that.’’
Early betting at Ladbrokes.com.au for the Golden Eagle has Roheryn marked at $17 while Chris Waller’s new stable acquisition Arcadia Queen heads the market order at $4.
Doncaster Mile winner Brutal is on the second line of betting at $4.60 just ahead of Australian Guineas and All-Star Mile winner Mystic Journey at $5.
