Paul Perry’s Newport has come out of a short stint at retirement to return to racing at Hawkesbury this weekend.
The rising nine-year-old gelding spent the last five months in the paddock after a Sydney spring campaign last year.
Trainer Paul Perry decided to cut short his horse’s retirement after Newport showed that he still wanted to race.
“He had about five months off but he looked so well we decided to bring him back into work,” Perry said.
“I said the first sign that he shows us he’s not enjoying himself, we would pull the pin but he is working with all his old enthusiasm.”
Newport is now set to run in the $150,000 Listed XXXX Gold Rowley Mile this Saturday.
“I’m not saying he can win on Saturday but I wouldn’t be surprised if he ran a nice race,” Perry said.
Newport has had a successful career that has seen him win nine of his 61 race starts and accumulate over $1.2 million in prize money.
