Rekindled Alliance Substitutes Guineas Run For Phar Lap Stakes

Rekindled Alliance is due to run in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes at Rosehill this weekend after missing out on a Randwick Guineas run last weekend.

The rain in Sydney forced trainer Paul Messara to scratch Rekindled Alliance from the Randwick Guineas field, however, he will be ready to impress this Saturday.

Messara will then considering sending the Redoute’s Choice colt to the Rosehill Guineas on March 31.

“He’ll run in the Phar Lap and could back up in the Rosehill Guineas the following week,” Messara said.

“If he doesn’t go to the Guineas he will go to the Tulloch (Stakes).”

Rekindled Alliance has won one of his six race starts and has earned more than $80,000 in prize money.

His only win came in his first start at a Canterbury maiden.

Since then, the three-year-old has constantly run in quality fields, including the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes last spring.

Jockey Corey Brown will ride Rekindled Alliance in the Phar Lap Stakes with the aim of partnering him in the Group 1 Australian Derby later in the autumn.

“I love the horse,” Brown said.

“I just hope it isn’t too wet. He just can’t accelerate on it the same way he does on top of the ground.

“We are playing catch-up a bit and he will have to back up at some stage to get to the Derby.”

Rekindled Alliance was purchased from the 2012 Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $400,000 and appears to be destined to nab his first Group win in the near future.

The closest the colt came to claiming a stakes victory was when second to Darci Be Good in the Group 3 Spring Stakes at Newcastle last September.
