The 2018 Warwick Stakes is a weight-for-age event held at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney every August. The Group 1 event is run over a 1400m journey with $500,000 in prize money up for grabs.
It’s held on the same day as the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes and also the Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes, both events exclusively for three-year-olds. The Warwick Stakes used to be a feature event held at Warwick Farm racecourse.
The Warwick Stakes often fields runners which competed in the Group 3 Missile Stakes two weeks earlier at Rosehill Gardens. It’s another of the races that mixes the fresh spring talent with the winter campaigners well into their preparation.
Well performing horses will move from this race directly on to the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes over a mile at Randwick in a fortnight.
Metal Bender won the 2010 event first up after a successful Brisbane Winter Carnival in which he claimed the Group 1 Doomben Cup. He joined a list of outstanding horses to have won the Warwick Stakes including Racing To Win in 2008, Sunline in 1999 and back to back winner Super Impose in 1991-1992.
The best ever though has to be Lohnro which won in 2001 and 2003 and only missed out in 2002 after finishing a tight second to Defier.
