The 2017 WH Stocks Stakes is a Group 2 event that lights up Moonee Valley Racecourse every September as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. It is a 1600m test under weight-for-age conditions which is worth [cf “prize_money”].

The WH Stocks Stakes is a mares only event for horses four years and older which provides the perfect lead up to bigger races later in the carnival. The Group 2 Blazer Stakes over 1400m at Flemington and the Group 3 Tristarc Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield are both options for horses that run well in this event.

For the very best of the mares they may even be targeted towards Group 1 level in the Myer Classic at Flemington on derby day.

The Stocks Stakes doesn’t usually attract an absolute top line field and is often overshadowed by the Group 1 Moir Stakes on the same night. Other events held on the night include the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes, the Group 3 JRA Cup and the Group 3 Champagne Stakes.

Having said that there has still been more than a couple of handy mares to win the Stocks Stakes as part of a very good racing career.

Sunday Joy won this race in 2003 with Tuesday Joy taking the race in 2008.

She’s Archie (2004), Devil Moon (2007) and Avienus (2010) are all among the winners of the event.
