Warrnambool Cup

The 2017 Warrnambool Cup is one of the biggest events on the Warrnambool calendar. Eagerly anticipated by racing fans nationwide, the Warrnambool Cup is one of those country races that grows a lot larger than its boundaries. With horses coming from far and wide to compete in this country vs city clash, the 2017 Warrnambool Cup is guaranteed to be a great race.

One of the few listed races at small tracks that gain national attention (along with the Tasmanian Derby and the Wagga Cup), the Warrnambool Cup is a great race and part of a very enjoyable local race day. The main race of the day, the Warrnambool Cup is run alongside other, non-listed races.

Horses that perform well in the Warrnambool Cup usually have a decent autumn season behind them, having competed at other local races or at Sydney, Melbourne or Adelaide. The Warrnambool Cup takes place towards the end of the season, with only a few Morphettville race days before the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Raced over 2350 metres under handicap conditions, the Warrnambool Cup attracts a variety of talent from the immediate local area and elsewhere in the southern half of the country. Held at the picturesque Warrnambool racecourse, Warrnambool Cup day is always enjoyable, particularly with the usual size of the turnout.

The inaugural run of the Warrnambool Cup was in 1873, when Villiers took the title with a 3:57 run across a 3200 metre course. In 1879, the race was reduced to 2800 metres, and then 2000 metres in 1880. In 1889 and 1890 the race was increased to 2400m, but reduced again to 2000m in 1891. In 1904, the race was increased to 2200m and it remained that length for nearly a century, when in 2002 it was increased to its present-day distance of 2350m.

Notable winners of the Warrnambool Cup include Banca Mo (2013), Hissing Sid (2010, ’09), and Majestic Avenue (2000, ’02).
