The Tristarc Stakes 2018 is a Group 2 event run in the middle of October during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
It’s a mares only race which is contested under set weight conditions.
The Tristarc Stakes is run over a 1400m course with $200,000 in prize money on offer for the winners of the event. Runners are all four years of age and usually of a decent quality. The race has previously been run as the Harrolds Stakes and is run on the same day as the Group 1 Caulfield Cup.
The Tristarc Stakes is always an interesting contest and the 1400m opens the event up to a wide range of competition.
If the field isn’t first up for the season they may use something like the Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes at Flemington as a lead up event.
From here the well performing runners will likely make a Group 1 charge in the Myer Classic on Victoria Derby day or potentially stay at Group 2 level for the Matriarch Stakes on Emirates Stakes Day.
Given that a large portion of these mares go on to contest Group 1 glory it’s not surprising to see a good selection of horses in the winners list.
Procrastinate won the 1994 event on a day when third place was dead heated, something which also happened back in 1990.
Chlorophyll triumphed in the 1996 contest while Infinite Grace set a blisteringly quick time when winning in 2005.
2009 featured one of the best fields in the events history when Typhoon Tracy edged out Hot Danish in a battle of the champions.

The Tristarc Stakes field attracts horses from a wide range of racing backgrounds. Generally, though, the final Tristarc Stakes field tends to be a solid listing of thoroughly experienced mares who are racing on the back of a successful start to their spring campaign. As it is raced under set weights plus penalties, classier mares tend to target the Tristarc Stakes field.

As it is a 1400m event, those horses which enter the Tristarc Stakes nominations might come from mile racing or shorter distance sprinting. In the past, some top horses have featured among the Tristarc Stakes nominations and have gone on to great racing careers.
The 2018 Tristarc Stakes nominations will be released on Monday, October 16th.
