The Todman Stakes 2019, also called the Todman Slipper Trial, is a very important Group 2 contest hosted at Royal Randwick annually during the later part of March. As the name suggests the Todman Slipper trial is a preliminary event leading into the Group 1 Golden Slipper in a fortnights time.
The Todman Stakes is raced over both the same track and distance as the Golden Slipper but exclusively for colts and geldings headed to the race.
The two year olds have set weights and vie for both the $300,000 in prize money and ballot exemption to the main event.
The Todman Slipper Trial is hosted on the same card as the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Classic and the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes.
Amazingly given the races position in relation to the Group 1 the last horse to win the Todman Stakes / Golden Slipper double was Tierce way back in 1991.
Phelan Ready was second in this race before winning the Golden Slipper in 2009 and Sepoy did the same thing in 2011 when Todman Slipper winner Smart Missile was scratched at the gates.
The lack of Golden Slipper winners is even more profound when looking through the list of Todman Slipper Trial champions.
Octagonal won it in 19995, General Nediym in 1997, Exceed And Excel in 2003 and Charge Forward in 2004.
