The 2019 Goodwood Handicap is a Group 1 race held in May each year at Adelaide’s Morphettville Racecourse and is a feature of the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival. Run over a distance of 1,200 metres, The Goodwood is worth a total of $1 000,000 in prize money. The Goodwood has been run under set-weights plus penalty conditions since 2007. Before this time it was run under handicap conditions and was known as the Goodwood Handicap.
Races such as the RN Irwin Stakes, DC Mackay Stakes and Sydney’s George Ryder Stakes are often used as lead-up races to The Goodwood. I Am Invincible (2009 runner-up) won the DC Mackay Stakes before finishing second in The Goodwood, while Velocitea (2010) finished second in the George Ryder Stakes on her way to winning The Goodwood.
The first running of The Goodwood was back in 1881 when the race was won by D.O.D. The race has not been held on five occasions throughout The Goodwood’s history including the years 1886, 1887, 1888, 1942 and 1943. The race was first run as a Principal race over a distance of six furlongs. Australia’s conversion to the metric system saw The Goodwood change to a distance of 1,200 metres in 1973 and the race was given Group 1 status in 1980.
Notable winners of The Goodwood include Musket Belle (1911-12), Royal Gem (1946), Sword (1996), Spectrum (1998), Super Elegant (2004), Glamour Puss (2005) and Takeover Target (2009).
