The 2017 Sunline Stakes is a Group 2 race hosted by the Moonee Valley Race Club on a Friday night in late March every year. It’s a race solely for fillies and mares contested under weight for age conditions around the tight turning Moonee Valley circuit.
The Sunline Stakes is run over a mile trip with $200,000 in prize money on offer to the winners. The race was previously known as the Diamond Jubilee Stakes before taking the name of the former champion mare Sunline in recent years.
The Sunline Stakes has become a real fan favourite, especially given it’s one of the few stakes events each year run at night time under lights.
It’s hosted on the same card as the Group 1 William Reid Stakes during Moonee Valley’s autumn racing carnival.
Given the weight for age conditions of the race only the best fillies and mares have a genuine chance and it’s compulsory they’re capable of running out a strong 1600m.
Form races for the Sunline Stakes can include the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes, Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes and the Group 3 Matron Stakes.
Notable winners of the Sunline Stakes include Rose O’ War in 2000, Beautiful Gem in 2005 and more recently Zarita in 2010 and Nakaaya in 2011.
