The 2018 Stan Fox Stakes is a Group 2 event held towards the end of September annually at Randwick Racecourse during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. The race is contested over a 1500m trip and $200,000 in prize money is allocated to the winners.
The race is held on Golden Pendant Day and is specifically for three year olds with set weights. The Stan Fox Stakes runs alongside the Group 3 $300,000 Golden Pendant, Group 2 Shannon Stakes, Group 3 Gloaming Stakes, Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality, and Listed Reginald Allen Quality.
The Stan Fox Stakes always has at least a few good runners in the field and it often can have a full contingent of entries. The two main lead up races coming into this event are the Group 1 Golden Rose at Rosehill or even the Group 3 Spring Stakes up in Newcastle.
There is one last opportunity for the three year olds which back up well after this race on the final day of the Sydney Carnival, the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes. Prior to 2014, the Stan Fox Stakes was run over 1400m.
The winners list is littered with some of the best known Aussie horses in recent history as well as a few lesser known gallopers which rose to the challenge.
Leading the way are names like 1995 winner Octagonal and 2001 champion Lonhro.
More recent names to join the list include 2008 winner Dreamscape and Decision Time which triumphed in 2010.
