The St George Stakes, now called the Peter Young Stakes, is a Group 2 contest run at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne annually during February. It is part of the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival and is run under weight for age conditions.
The Peter Young Stakes are run across a trip of 1800m with a handy $200,000 in prize money up for grabs.
The race has plenty of importance in its own right and it also plays a crucial role in the lead up to one of the carnivals major events. The Group 1 Australian Cup is held just a couple of weeks after the St George Stakes making it a perfect springboard for a horse on its way t the top level.
Given that horses will go to Group 1 level from the St George Stakes gives it an extra level of prestige, helping it again is the fact horses may come from Group 1 level as well.
The CF Orr Stakes over 1400m is often used as a first up run for horses to find their legs before tackling the St George Stakes.
Elvstroem managed to complete the CF Orr / St George double back in 2005.
Joining that champion on the winners list are plenty of other highly credentialed runners.
Vo Rogue won back in 1988, making it a double the very next year.
It’s an effort that was repeated by Durbridge in 1994 / 1995 and then again by Northerly in 2002 and 2003.
Istidaad also won it twice albeit with a year in between the two victories (1997, 1999)
Other horses well worth a mention include Let’s Elope in 1992 and Dane Ripper which beat Might And Power home in 1998.
More recent winners of the St George Stakes include Theseo in 2009 and Heart Of Dreams in 2011.
