The 2018 Southern Cross Stakes is a Group 3 race held every year in late February at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney. Run over a trip of 1200m it is worth $150,000 in prize money and raced under quality handicap conditions.

The race is also known as the ‘Frederick Clissold Stakes’ and became the Southern Cross Stakes in 2009.

It is run on the same card as the Light Fingers Stakes at the start of the Sydney autumn carnival.

This race usually gets a good field of sprinters however the genuine top liners may not be present.

This is due in part to the early scheduling as well as the big events down in Melbourne at the same period.

Horses coming through this event are likely to continue on to the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup which is run at Warwick Farm on Chipping Norton Stakes Day in March over an extra 100m.

Dreamscape came close to scoring the double in 2010 when he finished second here and then won the Liverpool City Cup.

This can often be a tough race for punters given many will be first up from a spell and others may be at the end of a long preparation.

Previous winners of the Southern Cross Stakes include Pimpala Prince in 2000, Cool Front in 2005, The Free Starter in 2007, Kenny’s World in 2010 and Sister Madly in 2011.
