The 2017 Schillaci Stakes is a Group 2 event run towards the beginning of October in Melbourne during their famous Spring Racing Carnival. It is a weight-for-age contest run over the lightning quick trip of 1000m making it one of the most popular events on the racing calendar.
From 1970 right through until the turn of the century it was known as the Chirnside Stakes but in 2000 the decision was made to honour the excellent performing sprinter Schillaci and thus the Schillaci Stakes were born.
The race is held on day one of the three day Caulfield spring carnival and is run in the company of big Group 1 events like the Caulfield Guineas, Toorak Handicap, Thousand Guineas and the Caulfield Stakes.
Some of the top runners may come to this race from the Group 1 Manikato Stakes and many could even be first up for the season.
From here the option is most likely the Group 1 Darley Classic or an equally prestigious event.
There’s no hiding on a 1000m assignment and only the fastest and the best horses ever win the Schillaci Stakes.
Black Caviar won this race in 2010 and then went on to claim the Patinack Farm double.
Miss Andretti earned the same achievement with her performance in 2006.
Street Ruffian gained a rare double of this event when claiming the 1990 and 1991 titles while Falvelon won in 2000 and then placed in the next two events.
The race has been completed in under a minute every year since 1992 and the fastest time belongs to Lucky Secret in 2009.
