The 2018 Sandown Guineas is a Group 2 rated event held each year in November as the Melbourne spring racing carnival begins to wind down. It is a three year old event raced under set weight conditions with $250,000 in prize money.
It is hosted at Sandown Racecourse and contested across a trip of 1600m. The Sandown Guineas is an important event on the card and helps to make up a program which is the biggest and most lucrative of the year for Sandown race club.
Alongside the Sandown Guineas on the card are the likes of the Group 2 Zipping Classic, Group 3 Sandown Stakes, Group 3 Eclipse Stakes, Group 3 Summoned Stakes and Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes.
The Sandown Guineas is a tough race to win and it requires a gutsy horse to still be in shape towards the end of its prep.
It is the final black type event for three year olds in the spring and can either be one by the proven champion or a new contender.
All the three year old races of the spring give a good read on form with something like the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes on Derby Day at Flemington one of the better lead up events.
Adding to the need for a horse to be tough in this event is the fact the Sandown straight is long and on an uphill slope.
For that reason it’s best to find the horses that run out a genuine mile and above as those which are stretching for the distance will struggle to run out the trip.
While the best of the three year olds are unlikely to press on all the way to the Sandown Guineas there have been some good performers.
In 1990 Durbridge won the race and in 1993 Voting set a blistering time of 1:34.6.
That mark was equalled in 2000 when Scenic Warrior triumphed.
Since then, Sandown Guineas winners include Sender in 2006 and Queensland Group 1 champion Pressday in 2010.
2018 Sandown Guineas Field
The Sandown Guineas field draws a range of horses from mainly Victorian stables. However, it’s not particularly unusual for a NSW or SA horse to enter the Sandown Guineas field, either as a standalone race or as part of their spring campaign in the state. Quite often, a lot of the genuine three year old talents will have already gone to the paddock, and will not compete in the Sandown Guineas field.
