The 2017 Salinger Stakes, registered as the Linlithgow Stakes, is a Group 2 event run every year at Flemington Racecourse during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Held in late October, the Salinger Stakes are right in the midst of Australia’s most exciting period of horse racing and when all the bets horses are on show.
The Salinger Stakes is worth [cf “prize_money”] and contested over a 1200m sprint. Being on the Flemington circuit means the sprint is down the main straight making it one of the most looked forward to racing spectacles.
Also known as the Linlithgow Stakes, the event has also been run as The Age Classic in previous years. It also used to be run under weight-for-age conditions before the change in 2007 which coincided with the date change.
The Salinger Stakes is traditionally run on the Derby Day card which is day one of the four day Melbourne Cup Carnival.
There are four Group 1 events on the program including the Victoria Derby, Myer Classic, Mackinnon Stakes and the Coolmore Stud Stakes. Other black-type events held on the day are the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes and three Group 3 events, the Carbine Club Stakes, Lexus Stakes and Chatham Stakes.
The Salinger Stakes always has a quality field of horses on hand and the pace is always very quick.
Lead up events can often include races like the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint or the Group 1 Moir Stakes.
Being on a straight track there is no room to hide over the 1200m and only the toughest horses can keep the pace up to the line.
Because of this the list of Salinger Stakes winners is quite impressive and features some of the best race horses Australia has ever produced.
Planet Ruler won back to back races in 1989 and 1990, something no horse has managed to do since.
The time of 1:07.1 set by Rubitano in the 2002 event is the quickest winning time registered in the Salinger Stakes.
One of the best ever Takeover Target won in 2004 with Glamour Puss winning in 2005 and then going on to claim the Group 1 Darley Classic as well.
More recently Hot Danish won in 2008 with Whitefriars taking out the 2010 event.
