The 2018 RA Lee Stakes is a Group 3 contest raced at Morphettville Racecourse in the South Australian capital Adelaide. It is held in late April or early May each year and is contested over a trip of 1600m.
The race has a total prize pool of $150,000 and is raced under set weight and penalty conditions.
The RA Lee Stakes is run on The Goodwood Day program, the biggest day of the Adelaide autumn racing carnival and one of the biggest days all year.
The headline act on the card is the Group 1 The Goodwood.
The RA Lee Stakes generally has a field of mainly local horses but the odd handy runner does come across from interstate.
Usually they are Melbourne horses which are fit and in form with owners looking for another race following the conclusion of the Melbourne autumn carnival.
Budriguez was exactly this type of horse and he won the 2011 RA lee Stakes after running second in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap at Caulfield.
This event also has a habit of producing back to back winners.
Blast The Glass did it in 1988 and 1989 while More Action repeated it in 1999 and 2000.
It happened again with Sylvaner in 2002 and 2003 while more recent champions include Serious Speed in 2009 and Majestic Music in 2010.
