The 2017 Quezette Stakes is a Group 3 sprinting event held at the prestigious Caulfield Racecourse towards the beginning of the Spring Racing Carnival.
Open only to fillies, the Quezette Stakes provides a sprinting competition equivalent to the Vain Stakes, which is essentially the colts and geldings counterpart to the Quezette Stakes.
With a total purse of $150,000 at stake, this 1100m event provides a true test of each horse’s finishing abilities. Run under set weights plus penalties, the Quezette Stakes field is usually relatively evenly talented, allowing for a tighter competition and increased excitement for racegoers.
The Quezette Stakes shares a race card with the Group 3 Vain Stakes and the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes. The first group race reserved strictly for fillies in the spring racing carnival, the Quezette Stakes often features a divided field. There will be some runners who are competing first or second up following a spell during winter, or there’ll be a few horses who have continued racing throughout winter and aren’t too long between starts.
Fillies who prove themselves in the Quezette Stakes results might go on to compete in events such as the Group 3 HDF McNeil Stakes or the Group 3 Thousand Guineas Prelude.
Inaugurated in 1994, the Quezette Stakes is named in honour of Quezette, who won 7 races as a two year old and set the Australian record for five furlongs. Between 1994 and 2005 the Quezette Stakes was raced over 1200m. However, since 2006 it has been held over 1100m. Initially a listed race, the Quezette Stakes gained Group 3 status in 2013. Excepting 1997 when it was held at Caulfield for a year, the Quezette Stakes was held at Sandown Park between 1994 and 2001. From 2002 onwards, Caulfield Racecourse has been the host.
Notable Quezette Stakes winners include Stella Artois (1999), La Lagune (2001) and Alinghi (2004).
