The 2019 Queensland Guineas is a Group 2 race held every May or June at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse. The 1400m event for three-year-olds is run under set-weight conditions with $350,000 prize money on offer.
It is held on one of Queensland’s biggest race days, Queensland Oaks Day, and run in conjunction with the Group 1 Queensland Oaks and two Group 2 races, the Eagle Farm Cup and the QTC Cup. The popularly contested sprint attracts a more than reasonable field of both Queensland trained horses and proven interstate challengers.
The Group 3 Fred Best Classic is used by a lot of runners as a lead up event but the form coming from the race can be a little tricky to read. In 2009 Express Air ran fifth in the Group 3 event before stepping up in class to storm to victory in the Queensland Guineas.
The 2010 winner Rothesay chose a different path, contesting and winning the Group 3 Lord Mayors Cup on his way to a Guineas triumph.
Some excellent horses have won the Queensland Guineas over the years including Melbourne Cup runner-up Yippyio in 1997, Triscay in 1991 and Planet Ruler way back in 1988.
