The 2018 Queensland Derby is a Group 1 race that is run as part of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival in June of each year. Worth $600,000, this year the Queensland Derby is run at Doomben Racecourse under set-weight conditions with the distance being reduced from 2400m to 2200m. The Queensland Derby is open to three-year-old horses only. The Queensland Derby is run on the same day as both the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap and the Group 1 The TJ Smith (JJ Atkins).
The first Queensland Derby was run in 1871 when it was won by Hermit. The race was held in Gayndah for the first three years of its running, but was moved to Eagle Farm in 1871. The race was held twice in 1870, with both races being won by the same horse; Grafton. The Queensland Derby was not held from 1873-1877 and then again from 1942-1946 due to the Second World War. The race was not held for the last time in 1972. De Gaulle Lane holds the record for the fastest winning time of 2 minutes and 25.2 seconds, while the slowest winning time was posted by Rough Habit (1990) who passed the post in 2 minutes and 39.3 seconds.
The most commonly used lead-up races to the Queensland Derby are the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate, which takes place two weeks prior at Doomben Racecourse, and the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes the week before. Empire Choice (2007) has taken out the Rough Habit Plate and Queensland Derby double, while Ice Chariot (2006) picked up the Grand Prix Stakes double. Other notable winners of the Queensland Derby include Tulloch (1957), Kingston Town (1980), Strawberry Road (1983) and Dariana (2010).
