The 2015 Newcastle Spring Stakes is a Group 3 race run on Wednesday each year at Broadmeadow racecourse in Newcastle on the New South Wales central coast. It’s part of both the Sydney spring racing carnival but also the two day Newcastle Carnival.
The Spring Stakes is a three year old race that’s run over a trip of 1600m under set weight.
It’s worth $125,000 and held on the same card as the Group 3 Cameron Handicap with the Group 3 Newcastle Cup headlining day two on Friday.
While in the past this race may have been seen as an ‘easier’ option for three year olds now days that’s simply not the case.
In fact over recent years trainers have been using this event more and more as part of a path to the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes in Sydney later in the carnival.
Those to win the double include Coronation Day in 1992, Universal Prince in 2000, Hotel Grand in 2005 and Sousa in 2008.
Darci Be Good won here in 2011 but was narrowly beaten as favourite to finish second in the Group 1 behind outsider Doctor Doom.
Horses can come from a variety of pathways into this race however the Listed Ming Dynasty Handicap at Warwick Farm can be a good guide.
Previous winners of the Newcastle Spring Stakes include Shogun Lodge in 1999, Magic Albert in 2001, Clangalang in 2002 and Ilovethiscity in 2010.
