The 2017 Naturalism Stakes is a Group 3 race that takes place at Caulfield racecourse in September each year.
Run over a distance of 2,000 metres, the Naturalism Stakes is run as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The Naturalism Stakes is run under open quality handicap conditions and is worth [cf “prize_money”] in prize money.
The Naturalism Stakes was first run in 2000 when it was won by Celestial Show. Because it is a relatively young race, the Naturalism Stakes hasn’t had decades to develop a prestigious reputation like so many other races at Caulfield. Even so, the Naturalism Stakes has developed a following as a genuine test of skill for milers and stayers.
The Naturalism Stakes tends to attract horses who are well into the swing of their spring campaign and may be seeking a good step-up race before challenging greater distances such as 2400m events.
The race was originally run as a Listed race until 2009 when it was granted its Group 3 status. The Naturalism Stakes is usually a great guide to races such as the Yalumba Stakes, Group 1 Caulfield Cup, Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup or Group 1 Cox Plate.
The Naturalism Stakes is run on Underwood Stakes Day in Melbourne and shares its program with the Group 1 Underwood Stakes and Group 3 How Now Stakes.
Notable Naturalism Stakes winners include Sarrera (2005), Zipping (2006) and December Draw (2011).
