The 2018 Moonee Valley Vase, formerly known as the AAMI Vase, is a Group 2 event run annually at Moonee Valley Racecourse during the world renowned Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Every October a crack field of three-year-olds line up to take on the 2040m assignment.
The MV Vase is worth $200,000 and is contested under set weight conditions. The importance of the event is highlighted by its inclusion on the Group 1 Cox Plate Day, the most significant day of racing to be held at Moonee Valley every year.
The Moonee Valley Vase is usually assured of attracting a top field as it’s used as a lead up event to the Group 1 Victoria Derby a week later at the start of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
That is the premier three-year-old event of the spring meaning any horses required one final tune up will run in the AAMI Vase.
Coming into the event they may have run in either the Group 2 Stutt Stakes or the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas. Some may even graduate from the Group 3 Caulfield Classic.
There have been a handfuls of runners which have managed to claim the Moonee Valley Vase / Victoria Derby double. Efficient (2006), Plastered (2004)and Helenus (2002) are the most recent horses to achieve the honour.
2008 champion Whobegotyou almost completed a miraculous winning run when winning both the Stutt Stakes and Caulfield Guineas before claiming this event. Unfortunately he fell just short in the Victoria Derby finishing second.
Winner of the 2006 AAMI Vase Efficient became a legend of racing after winning the Melbourne Cup the next year.
That shows the quality of runners witnessed in the race over the past decade and the talent has been like that for years.
Naturalism won the 1991 event, Blevic won in 1994 with the fastest recorded time and champion Mossman triumphed in 1998.
