The 2017 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic, also known as the Moonee Valley Oaks, is a Group 2 contest held annually at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne. The boutique venue is a real favourite for fans as it hosts a popular Friday night race series under lights, the Moonee Valley Fillies Classic falling into this schedule.
It is a race specifically for three year old fillies and is worth $200,000 in prize money. Fillies contesting the Moonee Valley Oaks will run across a 1600m course and are weighted at a set level.
In 2010 it received a distance upgrade over 100m from the former 1500m trek.
The Moonee Valley Fillies Classic is a handy little race and one which many fillies stop off at on the road to further carnival success.
The big goal for many will by the Australasian Oaks, a Group 1 race held later the next month. Some horses may even head to South Australia for their carnival and a race like the Group 3 South Australian Oaks.
Staying locally it is also a great lead in to the Group 2 Kewney Stakes held at Flemington on Super Saturday.
While Moonee Valley doesn’t host massive fields it does tend to see quality fields pass through.
Sunline won the inaugural Moonee Valley Fillies Classic back in 1999 and to this day is probably the biggest champion.
Others include Special Harmony in 2004, Absolut Glam in 2008 and recent winner Lights Of Heaven in 2011.
A date change from Autumn to Spring in 2012 led to two editions of the race being held that year.
