The 2019 Kewney Stakes is a Group 2 contest raced annually in the first few weeks of March during the Melbourne autumn racing carnival. The event is hosted at the iconic Flemington Racecourse where it stretches for 1400m around the circuit.
The Kewney Stakes is specifically for three year old fillies and the set weight conditions bring out only the most talented horses. The prize money on offer comes in at a lucrative $200,000.
The Kewney Stakes is run on Super Saturday at Flemington, a day worth upwards of three million overall. The Group 1 Newmarket Handicap and the Group 1 Australian Cup are both run on the same card.
As the prize money suggests the Kewney Stakes is the pinnacle race for three year old fillies during the Melbourne autumn racing carnival.
There are a variety of lead up events before this race including the Group 3 Vanity Stakes, the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes and the Group 2 Moonee Valley Oaks.
From here the best performing horses are likely to head north for the Sydney autumn racing carnival while some may even travel west for the Adelaide racing carnival as well.
The big Group 1’s on offer for these horse in NSW are the Storm Queen Stakes and the AJC Oaks. In 2010 Faint Perfume won the Kewney Stakes before completing a memorable Sydney trip where she won the Storm Queen Stakes and fell agonisingly short to finish second in the AJC Oaks.
Gallica was the last horse to have major success after travelling west from the Kewney Stakes, she managed to win this in 2009 and then follow it up with the Group 1 Australasian Oaks as well.

Mannerism was the 1991 champion and Sunline the victor in 1999.
Special Harmony got up in 2004 and recently Faint Perfume won in 2010 and Do Ra Mi in 2011.
