The 2016 Tesio Stakes, also known as the Eliza Park International Stakes (and Inglis Mile in the past), is a Group 3 race run at Moonee Valley Racecourse during October every year as part of the Melbourne spring racing carnival. It is an event for mares aged four years old and over and is contested over a 1600m journey.
The Tesio Stakes is worth $150,000 and has formerly been known as the Inglis Mile, the BMW Plate, the BMW Australia Stakes and in 2011 was called the Trojan Hand Tools Stakes. It is currently sponsored by Eliza Park.
The race gained Group 3 status in 1980 but was demoted to listed status in 1990 before returning back to Group 3 in 1994.
The Eliza Park International Stakes was first run over the mile in 1990.
The Tesio Stakes is held on the same card as the Cox Plate, the biggest race of the year at Moonee Valley.
Events that can provide some form leading into it are the Group 3 How Now Stakes at Caulfield or the Group 2 Blazer Stakes at Flemington.
If a horse is good enough to rise to the next level the Group 1 Myer Classic looms as a major attraction on Derby Day at Flemington.
The Matriarch Stakes is also an option at Group 2 level.
Previous winners of the Tesio Stakes include Gentle Genius in 2002, Joy Of Flight in 2004, and Lady Lynette who went back to back in 2009 and 2010 before running third in 2011 behind Ocean Challenger.
The 2008 event was one to remember with Miss Badoura and Bird Of Fire dead heating for first place.

Because it is held on Cox Plate Day, the Eliza Park International Stakes field often consists of top quality mares who simply weren’t up to the task of some of the more lucrative races on the day.
