The 2019 Golden Slipper is a sprint race for two-year-olds held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney. The Golden Slipper Stakes is worth over $3.5 million dollars making it the richest two-year-old race in the world. Run over a distance of 1,200 metres, the first Golden Slipper was held in 1957 when it was won by the Star Kingdom colt Todman. Star Kingdom went on to sire the next four winners of the Golden Slipper. This feat has only ever been equalled by one other sire, Danehill , who has also sired five winners of the Golden Slipper.
Tommy Smith has been the most successful trainer in the history of the Golden Slippper; claiming the event on six occasions. Smith’s daughter Gai Waterhouse has won the Golden Slipper odds five times, while Bart Cummings, Clarry Conners and Lee Freedman have trained the winner of the race on four occasions.Waterhorse also made history when three of her five starters in the 2001 Golden Slipper finished in first, second and third.
The Group 2 Reisling Stakes and Group 2 Todman Stakes are considered the major lead-up races to the Golden Slipper, but in recent years the winner of the race has also come through events like the Magic Night Stakes and Pago Pago Stakes. A number of juveniles are set for both the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) and Golden Slipper, but only John’s Hope (1972), Manikato (1978), Bounding Away (1986), Courtza (1989) and Sepoy (2011) have been able to complete the rare double.
The Golden Slipper has been won by a number of champion Australian horses and the honour roll for the Group 1 event includes Skyline (1958), Sky High (1960), Eskimo Prince (1964), Vain (1969), Luskin Star (1977), Manikato (1978), Marscay (1982), Miss Finland (2006), Sebring (2008), Sepoy (2011) and Pierro (2012).
Arguably the most memorable win in the history of the Golden Slipper was that of Belle Du Jour, who took out the 2000 edition of the race in thrilling circumstances. Belle Du Jour reared and completely missed the start, almost throwing jockey Lenny Beasley from the saddle, but was able to come thundering home in the final stages of the race to score a famous victory.
Of the 57 golden slippers run to date, 33 winners have been colts or geldings, while 24 winners have been fillies.
