The 2018 Golden Pendant is a Group 2 race held at Rosehill Gardens during the Sydney spring racing carnival. It was formerly known as the ‘Research Stakes’ and is for fillies and mares aged three and up.
The race is run across a trip of 1200m and is worth a hefty $400,000.
It is held on the same card as the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes, the middle day of the Randwick carnival.
The race was first changed from the Research Stakes in 2011.
The Golden Pendant is held towards the end of September and as such the majority of horses tend to have had a run before starting here.
That said some will tackle it first up and Screen won doing it this way at big odds in 2011.
If a horse has run before this though it’s likely to have come through the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes at Rosehill a couple of weeks earlier.
The Australian Turf Club are pushing to have this event lifted in status which is why there’s such good prize money on offer. In 2012, the distance was increased to 1400m. In 2015, the Golden Pendant was upgraded to Group 2 status.
Given the quality of previous winners it seems likely the Golden Pendant will be promoted sometime in the near future.
Spinning Hill won the Golden Pendant back in 2000 while Fumble got up in 2005.
Since then the great Hot Danish took out the 2009 instalment with Trim getting it done in 2010.
2018 Golden Pendant Field
The Golden Pendant field regularly attracts some of the best fillies and mares on the NSW racing circuit. Outside of that, some interstate and foreign horses tend to crop up occasionally. The considerable prize money and associated prestige tends to draw quite a few very talented horses to the Golden Pendant field.
