The 2019 George Ryder Stakes is a Group 1 race that takes place at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival each year. Run over a distance of 1,500 metres, the George Ryder Stakes is now worth $1,000,000 in prize money. The race previously takes place on Golden Slipper Day, alongside the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m), Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m).
The first George Ryder Stakes was run in 1903 when it was won by Marvel Loch. The George Ryder Stakes was initially run over a distance of 1,400 metres but that was changed to 1,450 metres in 1985 before the race was extended to today’s distance of 1,500 metres the following year.
The Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) is considered the key lead-up race to the George Ryder Stakes. Horses that perform well in the George Ryder Stakes generally go on to contest races like the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m), Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at the end of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
The George Ryder Stakes honor roll is littered with a number of the most talented horses in the history of Australian racing and in recent years the race has only been won by top-level performances. Manikato (1979 and 1980), Emancipation (1983 and 1984), Campaign King (1987 and 1988) and Lonhro (2003 and 2004) have both won the George Ryder Stakes on multiple occasions, while Schillaci (1993), Racing To Win (2006), Haradasun (2007), Weekend Hussler (2008) and Pierro (2013) have also tasted success in the race.
George Ryder Stakes Field
The George Ryder Stakes field is always filled with a number of talented gallopers and can be run with a capacity field of 19 runners. The Group 1 event has not been run with a capacity field in the last thirty years and there is generally not a scramble to earn a spot in the field, but the winner of the Canterbury Stakes is offered ballot exempt entry into the races. The George Ryder Stakes is now worth an impressive $1 million in prize money and also offers the winner automatic entry into the Doncaster Mile at Royal Randwick a fortnight later.
