The 2017 Furious Stakes is a Group 2 event held each year at Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse during the Spring Racing Carnival. It is contested over 1400m with $175,000 the prize for the top finishing connections.
The Furious Stakes is run on the same day as the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes and always attracts a handy group of horses. It’s a three year old fillies only event with set weights which sets up the top runners for Group 1 success later in the spring.
Many horses may come to this event through the Group 3 Silver Shadow Stakes held at Warwick Farm a fortnight earlier over 1200m. From 2013 onwards, the Furious Stakes has been run as 1200m event.
From this event they could step up in distance again for the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill ahead of the major event of the season, the Flight Stakes back at Randwick over a mile on Epsom Handicap Day.
This series of races is closely intertwined with each race proving a great form guide for the next.
Samantha Miss (2008), Mnemosyne (2005) and Victory Vein (2002) all won the Silver Shadow Stakes on their way to claiming the Furious Stakes.
Samantha Miss (2008), Mnemosyne (20050, Prisoner Of Love (2004), Shamekha (2003) and Victory Vein (2002) all went on to then win the Tea Rose Stakes after their victory here.
Having said this only Samantha Miss (2008) and Angst (1993) managed to complete the entire Princess Race Series with win in all four legs (Silver Shadow, Furious, Tea Rose and Flight Stakes).
