The 2017 Fred Best Classic is a Group 3 race that takes place at Doomben Racecourse in Brisbane in May each year.
Run over a distance of 1,350 metres, the Fred Best Classic is run as part of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. The Fred Best Classic takes place under set-weight conditions and is open to three-year-old horses only. The race is worth a total of $150,000 in prize money.
The Fred Best Classic was first run in 1988 when it was won by a horse called McGintys Crown. The race was previously known as the BTC Classic, however after the Brisbane Turf Club (BTC) and Queensland Turf Club (QTC) merged to become the Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) in 2009 the race was renamed the Fred Best Classic.
The Fred Best Classic is run on Doomben Cup Day, which is one of the biggest days of the Brisbane Winter Carnival. The race shares its day with the Group 1 Doomben Cup, Group 3 The Roses, Group 3 BRC Sprint and Listed Lancaster Stakes and Dalrello Stakes.
Notable winners of the Fred Best Classic include Marlina (2001), Gallieni (2004), Gumnuts (2005), La Montagna (2006) and Skilled (2011).
2017 Fred Best Classic Field
The Fred Best Classic field usually features some of the better middle distance three year olds on the Brisbane circuit. Quite often, several interstate gallopers will make the journey to contest the Fred Best Classic field alongside the locals.
