The 2018 Edward Manifold Stakes is a Group 2 event run at the start of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival at Flemington Racecourse. It’s an event for three year old fillies run under set weights across a 1600m trip.
The winners at the end of the mile are greeted with $200,000 in prize money and the illustrious Edward Manifold Stakes title. The race is run on the same day as the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes and is the first of the top quality Group racing for fillies during the carnival.
Only the best fillies can navigate their way across the vast Flemington track and they always need to find a little bit extra to win the Edward Manifold Stakes.
There are a few options coming into this event including the Group 3 HDF McNeil Stakes or the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude.
For the top performers in this race the path is a little more direct with the Group 1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield run just 10 days later.
From there they can continue their Group 1 charge in the Wakeful Stakes and ultimately the Crown Oaks.
There have been plenty of top performers in the Edward Manifold stakes with the very best of them going on to grab a prized Thousand Guineas double.
Gallica in 2008, Alinghi in 2004, Special Harmony in 2003, Inaflury in 1998, Azzurro in 1992, Richfield Lady in 1991 and Riverina Charm in 1988 can all lay claim to achieving wins in both races.
Some other notable recent runners in the Manifold Stakes include She Will Be Loved which beat Miss Finland in 2006 and 2010 winner Sistine Angel ahead of Brazilian Pulse and Shamrocker.
