The 2017 Eagle Farm Cup or ‘PJ O’Shea Stakes’ as it has previously been known is one of the feature events of the Brisbane winter racing carnival in Queensland. It’s rated at Group 2 level and carries a prize pool of $250,000.
The Eagle Farm Cup is an open weight for age contest attracting the best middle distance horses in work at the time. The race stretches for 2200m around the circuit, 200m less than the 2400m that was run up until 2010.
The race has origins all the way back to 1947 when it was first run and won by Russia.
Horses coming into this race are often likely to have run in the Group 1 Doomben Cup beforehand.
Scenic Shot won the Doomben Cup / Eagle Farm Cup double in 2009 while the 2011, 2010, 2005 and 2004 winners all placed in the Doomben Cup before winning this.
The natural progression for horses form this race is either the Group 2 Brisbane Cup over 2400m the next week or the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup over the same distance on the final day of the carnival.
Scenic Shot was the last horse to claim the Eagle Farm Cup / Brisbane Cup double with his victories in 2009.
Being a weight for age race the history of winners shows some true champions of the turf.
Rough Habit won it in 1995 while Melbourne Cup runner up Yippyio won in 2011.
Scenic Shot claimed back to back titles in 2008 and 2009 while the 2011 was European import Glass Harmonium.
