Danehill Stakes

The 2017 Danehill Stakes is a Group 2 race held every September at Flemington Racecourse during Melbourne’s Spring Racing Carnival. The 1200m sprint for three-year-old’s is worth a quarter of a million dollars and has previously been known as the Black Douglas Stakes, Hilton on the Park Stakes and the L’oreal Plate.

The Danehill Stakes always attracts a big crowd as every 1200m event does at Flemington because it’s run down the famous straight meaning nothing but sheer pace will get your runner home.  It’s a follow up of the HDF McNeil Stakes run at Caulfield the week before except obviously with no turn.

The HDF McNeil Stakes aren’t a great form guide for the Danehill Stakes though with the last horse to complete the double coming way back in 1995 with Gold Ace.

The very top three-year-old’s don’t always turn out in force for the event but there’s certainly been more than a few handy winners in its existence.

Point Danger won in 1998 and the classy Fastnet Rock triumphed in 2004.

What will likely go down in history as the most famous horse to ever win the race though is Black Caviar, the best rated horse in the world in 2011 claimed this event in 2009.

2017 Danehill Stakes Field

The Danehill Stakes field is usually comprised of a decent selection of Victorian horses, interstate runners and the occasional foreign raider. Those horses which make it through the acceptances into the final Danehill Stakes field are by and large competent sprinters with a good run in set weights with penalties events. The Danehill Stakes field races over 1200m, making it ideal for most sprinters to have a crack at.

As soon as all details are finalised, the 2017 Danehill Stakes field will be published here.
