The Dane Ripper Quality, also called the Dane Ripper Stakes, is run in the heart of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival hosted at Doomben Racecourse. In 2009 it became a Group 2 rated event and with it came $200,000 in prize money.
The race is contested over a 1400m trek under set weight conditions. The Dane Ripper Stakes a fillies and mares only race that was once exclusively for local horses but more interstate competition was expected after the move to Group 2 status.
Expectations have become reality, and there are now multiple interstate horses regularly nominated for the Dane Ripper Quality, along with international raiders from New Zealand.
The race is held on the same day as the Group 1 Queensland Oaks with the top performing girls in the Dane Ripper Quality likely to try and step up in class two weeks later for the Group 1 Winter Stakes also over 1400m on the Eagle Farm surface.
Obviously moving from Group 2 to Group 1 competition is a tough ask but in 1996 Tripping managed to complete a rare Dane Ripper Quality / Winter Stakes double.
A real shock came around in 2009 when Russeting finished fourth in the Dane Ripper Stakes but then managed to find multiple lengths in just two weeks to win the Winter Stakes the same year.
The path of 2010 winner Set For Fame saw her run a distant seventh in the Group 1 weight-for-age BTC Cup before dropping back to Group 2 level and winning by a length.
