The 2017 Cockram Stakes is a Group 3 race that is run at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne during August each year. Run over a distance of 1,200 metres, the Cockram Stakes is worth $150,000 in prize money and is run under set-weight plus penalty conditions. Run as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the Cockram Stakes is open to mares aged four-year-old and upwards only.

The Cockram Stakes is run on the same day as the Group 1 Memsie Stakes. Also on the same race program are two other Group 3 events, the HDF McNeil Stakes and The Heath 1100. The listed Slickpix Stakes, worth $120,000, is also held on the day.

The Cockram Stakes (registered as the WW Cockram Stakes) is named after Wally Cockram, a renowned thoroughbred breeder based in Victoria who also served the Victorian Amateur Turf Club and Melbourne Racing Club as Vice Chairman for 14 years (1970-84).

The first Cockram Stakes was run in 1992 when it was won by the well-known Pride Of Demus. Horses that run in the Cockram Stakes are often handy mares that have performed well in the past and are on their way to better feature races during the spring carnival.

Mares that run well in the Cockram Stakes often go on to runs well in races such as the Group 3 Let’s Elope Stakes, Group 3 How Now Stakes, Group 2 WH Stocks Stakes and Group 2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes. Cats Whisker went on to win both the WH Stocks Stakes and Rose Of Kingston Stakes after winning the Cockram Stakes in 2009.

Notable Cockram Stakes winners include Chillies (1999), Strikeline (2004), Dea (2005), Storm Alert (2006) and Rhythm In Paris (2010).
